Iskar Lake – Trail riding

Endurance style horse riding for advanced riders – 4 riding days

This attractive horse riding trek will recharge your energy levels to the maximum with beautiful views and memorable experiences. Mountains, old forests, lakes and wild animals will leave lasting memories.

The route offers unforgettable views of Rila Mountain and the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula – Musala. On the shore of the Iskar lake, you can enjoy the turquoise views and swim with your horse in the crystal clear mountain waters of the lake. You will have the opportunity to ride among many wild animals (red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and others) through the meadows and old forests of the Iskar wildlife farm.

The terrain is soft, and the riding is 4 to 7 hours a day, mostly in trot and gallop. Riders must be in fit and confident at any riding pace.

Horses and riding

The horses are Purebred Arabian and Shagya Arabian. They are fit, strong, well trained, experienced, and easy manageable. The tack is all English. We provide small leather saddlebags for personal luggage. We recommend that riders bring their own hard hats, comfortable shoes and half chaps.

The riding is in the style of the Endurance discipline – suitable for experienced riders and for covering long distances up to 40+km per day. The main pace is trot, canter and gallop on suitable ground.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 – Rila Ranch – Raduil Village

Today we ride through old coniferous forests and high pastures, where we will enjoy the crystal clear mountain air, many herbs and flowers. We will have incredible views of the ski slopes of Borovets resort and the highest peak of the Balkan peninsula – Musala 2925 m.a.s.l.

Our goal for the day is the village of Raduil, a mountain village nestled in the foothills of Rila. The riding will be mainly fast trot and canter.

Day 2 – Raduil Village – Iskar Lake

From Raduil, along pleasant forest roads, we head to another mountain village for lunch in an authentic family restaurant. After lunch we descend to the sandy shore of the Iskar Lake, whose waters are collected from Rila mountain.

We ride for nearly 40 km through old forests and herbal fields. The night is in a bungalow on the shore of the lake.

Day 3 – Iskar Lake – Plana

In warm weather, many of our riders start their day by swimming with the horses in the clear waters of the lake.

After the departure, we enter the wildlife farm “Iskar”, where we gallop among red deers, fallow deers, roe deers, wild boars and other forest inhabitants bred there. We cross an old forest and can take a short lunch break at a roadside restaurant. On a scenic road we enter and ride through forests and meadows in Plana Mountain. We spend the night in a cozy guest house. The dinner is homemade. The ride for the day is about 45km long.

Day 4 – Plana – Rila Ranch

From the village of Plana we head back to Rila Ranch. The route passes along the ridge of the Plana mountain and the bed of the Palakaria river, and all the time our eyes are drawn to a breathtaking part of Rila mountain – Malyovitsa – the cradle of Bulgarian alpinism. The views are unforgettable. The ride for the day is about 35km.
