Rila Monastery – Alpine Trail Riding in Bulgaria

Mountain riding for advanced riders – 5 riding days

Strong and well-trained horses, breathtaking 360-degree views, diverse high mountain terrain, historical and natural sites and inspiring riding for adventurers.

You will have the opportunity to explore the heart of the Rila Mountains, cross an old high mountain Roman road, as well as enjoy two of the most popular landmarks in Bulgaria – the Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes.

This is one of the most attractive horseback riding routes in Bulgaria with more than 3500m of positive elevation gain and is designed for experienced riders in good physical shape. Expect breathtaking views and millions of photo opportunities.

Horses and riding

The horses are Purebred Arabian and Shagya Arabian. They are fit, strong, well trained, experienced, and easy manageable. The tack is all English. We provide small leather saddlebags for personal luggage. We recommend that riders bring their own hard hats, comfortable shoes and half chaps. For this trail we recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes as we lead the horses shortly on toughest terrain.

The riding is in the style of the Endurance discipline – suitable for experienced riders and for covering long distances up to 35-40km per day.

The pace varies between walk, trot and canter depending on the terrain.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 – Rila Ranch – Mechit Hut

From Rila Ranch in the village of Dospey we head to the Lakatitsa river valley. We cross the cold waters of the Cherni Iskar river and pass through authentic villages at the foot of the mountain. On a cool forest road, we begin the ascent of Northwestern Rila. We spend the night in a cozy forest hut while the horses enjoy fresh forest meadows.

The pace of riding on this day is mainly a trot, and depending on the terrain, it can be changed to a canter or walk.

Day 2 – Mechit Hut – Rila Monastery

Today is a long day full of incredible experiences, historical and natural sights.

After breakfast we start climbing to the Mechit peak (2567m) along a mountain path. There are incredible bird’s-eye views towards the heart of the mountain, the Samokov Valley, the Iskar Lake and countless mountain peaks. The background is wonderful for attractive photos.

We continue along an ancient Roman road that was renovated by King Ferdinand during the First World War to welcome the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. After crossing the ridge, we descend to the area of “Kobilino branishte” (Mare’s protection), where you will hear an interesting story about the origin of the name.

After a short break for lunch, we continue to lead the horses for a short time along rocky terrain to the beautiful “Suhoto” Lake. We descend into a picturesque forest and before our eyes pop-up breathtaking views of the most attractive rocks in Bulgaria – Dyavolski Igli & Zliyat Zab (the Devil’s Needles and the Evil Tooth).

We have a faster ride ahead and a visit to the impressive Rila Monastery.

Well-deserved rest and delicious mountain trout in a comfortable hotel.

Day 3 – Rila Monastery – Vada Hut

Most people think that the Seven Rila Lakes, seen from above, are the most beautiful sight in Bulgaria. This is because few have glimpsed the hard-to-reach Urdini Lakes, which are many times more impressive. Fortunately, you will be lucky enough to be among them.

During this day we will cross the whole mountain to reach the cozy Vada hut for the night and enjoy home cooked meals. In the mountains, we will meet wild horses, we will pass through extensive highland pastures, we will enjoy views of the most alpine part of Rila – Malovitsa and we will fill our hearts and souls with beauty.

The pace is walk and trot, and we will briefly lead the horses on a steep path.

Day 4 – Vada Hut – Belchin Banya

After breakfast, we head to the next destination – Belchin Banya.

The riding on this day is leisurely on soft forest terrain. Before the lunch break, we could stop to see “Tsari Mali grad” – a late antique Roman fortress from the IV – VI century, which was a Thracian sanctuary long before that – VIII – VI century BC.

Hotel and overnight with option to visit SPA centre with hot mineral water.

Day 5 – Belchin Banya – Rila Ranch

It’s time to ride freely on the vast fields of the Palakaria river valley. An abundance of wildflowers and soft farm roads suggest a fast pace. On this day we return to Rila Ranch.

Dinner and overnight in a guest house in the village of Dospey.
